    What is Nexium used for?

Nexium (esomeprazole) is used to treat certain esophagus and stomach problems (like ulcers and acid reflux). It works to decrease the amount of acid made by your stomach. Nexium helps to relieve symptoms like heartburn, persistent cough, and difficulty swallowing. Nexium also helps to heal acid damage to the esophagus and stomach, can prevent stomach ulcers and may help to prevent cancer of the esophagus. Esomeprazole is known as a proton pump inhibitor. If you are using the over-the-counter version of Nexium it is used to treat frequent heart burn (that which occurs more than twice a week).

Esomeprazole can take 1-4 days to reach the full effect, so these products do not relieve heartburn immediately. Carefully read the instructions on the packaging to ensure the product is right for you. Look at the ingredients on the label even if you’ve used this product before. Products with similar brand names could contain different ingredients for different purposes and taking the wrong product could harm you.

    Nexium Information

    How to Use Nexium (Esomeprazole)?

Always read the patient information that comes with the product before you start taking Nexium and every time you get a refill. If you take the over-the-counter version to self treat, carefully read and follow the label’s useage directions. If your doctor has prescribed this medication take the tablet by mouth as directed, usually once daily. The Nexium tablets must be swallowed whole and are not to be chewed or crushed.

The length of treatment and dosage are based off your medical status and response to treatment. Never tamper with the dose amount or frequency of use without talking to your doctor. You can also take antacids with this medication. If you also take sucralfate, ensure you take esomeprazole about 30 minutes before sucralfate. Use this medication regularly in order to get the best benefit from it and you should take it at the same time daily to help you to remember. Continue taking Nexium for the prescribed length of treatment even if you feel better. Do not take the over-the-counter product for more than 14 days unless your doctor says you can.

If your heartburn persists after 14 days or if you need to use Nexium more frequently than once every 4 months talk to your doctor. The risk of side effects increases over time. Talk to your doctor about how long you should  take this medication for.

    Nexium (Esomeprazole) Drug Interactions?

Drug interactions can affect how your medications work and might increase your risk of serious side effects. This list of medications that may interact with Nexium is not exhaustive so ensure you keep a list of everything you take and give it to your doctor so they can better monitor for drug interaction. Sometimes even though two medications interact taking both may be the best course of treatment for you, your doctor will adjust the frequency of use or doses for those medications so that you will have the lowest risk of side effects.
