What is Singulair (Montelukast Sodium) used for?

Singulair (montelukast) is a medication used to prevent wheezing and shortness of breath caused by asthma and lower the number of asthma attacks. Montelukast can also be used before exercise to prevent breathing problems while exercising. This medication can assist in decreasing the number of times you may need to use your rescue inhaler. Singulair is also used to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis and hay fever. This medication doesn’t work immediately and shouldn’t be used for the relief of sudden asthma attacks or other breathing problems. Singulair works by blocking natural substances that can cause and worsen asthma and allergies. It helps to make breathing easier by reducing inflammation in your airways.

    Singulair (Montelukast) Information

    How to Use Singulair?

Always read the information given with the medication when you start Singulair as well as when you refill it. Take montelukast by mouth either with or without food as instructed by your doctor. Your dosage will be based on your response to the medication and your medical condition. When you start Singulair or change the dosage watch out for side effects. There is an increased chance of mood and mental changes during these times.

If you’ve been prescribed the chewable tablets, chew them thoroughly before you swallow. If your child is unable to safely chew and swallow them, talk to a doctor or pharmacist for advice. Take montelukast at the same time daily. If you take it to prevent allergies, take your dose in the morning or evening. If you use Singulair to prevent breathing problems when you exercise take your dose at least 2 hours before you exercise.

Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours. If you take montelukast to mitigate allergies, do not take a dose before allergies as this may increase your risk of side effects. Do not change anything about how you take Singulair (dosage or frequency of use) without first consulting your doctor. Continue taking montelukast regularly to control your asthma, even during sudden asthma attacks and periods where you have no asthma symptoms. Continue taking other medications for asthma as instructed by your doctors.

Singulair works over time and is not intended for the relief of sudden asthma attacks. If an asthma attack or similar breathing problem occurs, use your prescribed quick-relief inhaler. You should always carry your quick-relief inhaler on you. If your asthma symptoms get worse and your quick-relief inhaler isn’t working tell your doctor promptly.
