What is Breo Ellipta used for?
Breo Ellipta (fluticasone furoate and vilanterol) is an inhaled corticosteroid and beta agonist used to manage the symptoms of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) including chronic bronchitis and asthma attacks (bronchospasm). Fluticasone (a steroid) prevents inflammation and Vilanterol (a bronchodilator) relaxes the muscles in the airways which helps with breathing problems. While this is used long term to treat COPD, it is used infrequently to control asthma until symptoms are under control. This is not used to treat sudden asthma attacks as it does not work quickly enough to be effective. Urgent treatment of asthma requires a rescue inhaler. If you are taking this for a different medication, you should clarify what condition this is meant to treat. Do not use this to treat friends and family that may have similar symptoms. It may not be effective and has the potential to cause side effects. Do not take this if you are allergic to milk proteins. This medication can weaken your immune system making you prone to infection. Your doctor may need to assess your risk of decreased bone mineral density and osteoporosis. This does not reduce the risk of serious asthma related breathing problems.
